How Hanover gets booked.

Most of the year this is a regional capital with a compact centre. For a few weeks a year it hosts the world's largest exhibition grounds, and the bookings change shape accordingly.

What is a Hanover chauffeur service?

A Hanover chauffeur service is a private car and driver booked in advance at a fixed price, operated as a Mietwagen under the Personenbeförderungsgesetz (PBefG, the federal Passenger Transport Act) by an operator licensed through Region Hannover, Team Allgemeine Ordnungsangelegenheiten / Personenbeförderung. It is not a taxi and cannot be stopped at the kerb. The vehicle class, the pickup point and the euro total are agreed before the day, whether that is a Hannover Airport transfer, a car to Hannover Messe, an hourly car service or a black car service for visiting clients.

Under section 49(4) of the PBefG, a Mietwagen booking has to reach the operator at its business seat before the trip, the car may not wait at taxi ranks, and after each job it returns to base unless the next booking is already in hand. In plain terms: you always book ahead, the price is settled before you get in, and the chauffeur is coming for you by name. Drivers hold the Fahrerlaubnis zur Fahrgastbeförderung, the passenger transport permit known as the P-Schein. RYDES arranges the trip; the licensed chauffeur operator carries it out. That is why a Hanover car service booking works well as a taxi alternative on a fair morning, when the metered queue at the halls is longest.

The same reservation reaches beyond the city. HAJ to Messe Hannover is the run most visitors book, followed by HAJ to Hannover Hauptbahnhof and the Volkswagen trips covered under HAJ to Wolfsburg. Around those sit Braunschweig and Celle transfers, hotels across Laatzen and the south, and corporate travel in Hanover for exhibitors moving a stand team every day of a show.

Airports for a Hanover trip.

Hannover Airport handles almost everyone. The alternatives only make sense when a flight simply does not exist from HAJ, and the road distance is the price of using them.

Drive times are door to door for a direct private car. Peak means roughly 07:00 to 09:00 and 16:00 to 18:00 on a weekday. Fair days at the Messe are their own category: the roads around the grounds and the Laatzen exits load up well beyond normal peak, so plan those trips with the fair-day figures in the timing table. Paderborn is an alternative in principle; distance and price for it are quoted on request.

Where your chauffeur meets you.

Hannover Airport is one connected building with three terminal piers, which keeps arrivals simple. The part worth knowing is how the kerb works, because stopping in front of the terminals is metered.

Hannover Airport terminals.

Hannover Airport has Terminals A, B and C in one complex, connected so you can walk between them airside and landside. The Airport Service Center is in Terminal B on the arrivals level. Terminal C was renovated and reopened in June 2020 and handles mainly non-Schengen flights, so if you arrive from outside the Schengen area, expect passport control before baggage reclaim and a slightly longer walk-out.

The airport carried about 5.3 million passengers in 2025, which is busy enough to have queues but small enough that a chauffeur rarely needs long to reach you. Timings onward are on HAJ to Messe Hannover and HAJ to Hannover Hauptbahnhof.

  • Short-stay pickup, the free defaultYour chauffeur collects you at the short-stay pickup area in front of the terminals or in car park P1, P2 or P3, whichever is named in the message sent before you land.
  • Meet and greet, a paid add-onYour chauffeur waits inside arrivals with your name and walks you to the car, useful with heavy luggage or a team to gather.
  • Terminal C for non-SchengenCar park P3 is the closest to Terminal C, which is why chauffeurs often use it for flights from outside the Schengen area.

How the HAJ kerb is charged.

The forecourt in front of all three terminals is read by number-plate recognition. The first 10 minutes are free, but only for two entries per vehicle per day. After that it costs €2 up to 30 minutes, €3 up to 45 minutes, €4 up to an hour, and €2 for each further 15 minutes, paid cashless or online up to 24 hours later. Car parks P1 to P3 give the first 30 minutes free.

A chauffeur waiting through a delayed landing can easily run past both free windows, especially when one car has already done two airport jobs that day. Whatever the airport charges for your pickup is treated as an airport fee and is inside the RYDES price. It never appears afterwards as an extra. See HAJ airport transfers for the pickup detail.

Business aviation at HAJ.

Private and business aircraft use the Karl Jatho General Aviation Terminal, open from 06:00 to 22:00 with customs on site, so international arrivals clear formalities without going through the main building. The chauffeur meets you at the terminal door, and the drive to the city or the Messe is the same as from the main terminals.

Fair weeks bring a noticeable rise in business-jet traffic, and slots at the general aviation terminal fill up along with the hotels. Book the car as soon as the slot is confirmed, and tell us the tail number or handling agent so the operator can confirm timing. Onward options are on HAJ to Wolfsburg and HAJ to Braunschweig.

Terminal and kerb facts above were checked against public sources in October 2026. Airport charges and terminal use change, so treat the message your chauffeur sends before landing as the authority on exactly where to walk.

Tolls, VAT and the airport kerb.

Driving in Hanover costs less in road charges than almost any large city in Europe. There is no car toll on the Autobahn, no congestion charge and, since 2025, no low-emission zone. What remains is VAT and the airport's own short-stay fees.

Germany charges cars nothing to use the Autobahn, and Hanover has never had a congestion or cordon charge. The city's Umweltzone has also gone: the low-emission zone was lifted, the last exemptions expired on 31 December 2024, and from 2025 no sticker is needed to drive into the centre. For a chauffeur fare that means road charges are not a factor at all inside Lower Saxony.

VAT is where taxis and chauffeur cars differ. German taxis charge VAT at the reduced 7 percent rate, which helps on short city trips. A Mietwagen does not qualify for it and charges the standard 19 percent, a position the Federal Fiscal Court (Bundesfinanzhof) confirmed in 2014. That 19 percent is inside every RYDES quote, along with any HAJ kerb or short-term parking charge for your pickup. Parking you ask for elsewhere, such as the car waiting in a restaurant garage, is the one thing outside it.

How charges reach the passenger in Hanover, by way of travelling. Taxi fares are metered at the locally set tariff.

On fair days the route matters more than any charge. A chauffeur heading to the Messe from the airport normally uses the A352 and A37, but the operator will change approach depending on which entrance you named and how the queues are building. None of that alters the quote. The full comparison with a metered ride is on Hanover taxi versus chauffeur.

How long it really takes.

On an ordinary weekday Hanover is quick to cross. Two things stretch it: roadworks on the B3 expressways and the days the exhibition grounds are full.

Two roadworks matter in 2026. The Südschnellweg (B3) is being rebuilt with a tunnel, and the road has been narrowed from four lanes to two. On the Messeschnellweg (B3), the Weidetorbrücke is down to one lane in each direction and closed to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, which affects how the operator routes the largest group vehicles. For a fair-week flight you cannot miss, add the full off-peak time again as a buffer.

Beyond the city.

Lower Saxony's industrial towns sit within an hour of Hanover, so a lot of fair visitors pair the Messe with a factory or supplier visit. Each run is priced as one fare for the whole journey.

Hanover has no cruise port. Intercity fares are fixed to the address you give, so a slow approach into Hamburg is the operator's concern rather than yours.

When you should not book us.

Hanover's airport train is good, cheap and frequent enough that for some travellers it is simply the better choice.

The S5 runs from Hannover Airport to the Hauptbahnhof in about 17 to 18 minutes, roughly every 30 minutes. The airport sits in the second GVH fare zone, so a single costs €4.70 for two zones from 1 January 2026, or €5.70 for three. With a Deutschlandticket at €63 a month, the ride is already covered. Travelling alone with a carry-on to a hotel near the station, the train is the sensible option. During major fairs extra rail and Stadtbahn services run to the Messe, though public transport is heavily used on fair days.

A chauffeur is worth paying for when the train does not fit: a hotel in Isernhagen or Laatzen that is nowhere near the S5, a fair morning when you need to arrive at a specific entrance on time, several stops in one day, a team with bags and sample cases, a late arrival after the trains thin out, or a trip on to Wolfsburg or Braunschweig. If none of that applies, take the train. The cost and time comparison is set out on Hanover taxi versus chauffeur.

Hanover questions.

If yours is not here, dispatch answers around the clock at +1 888 881 7933 or support@rydes.co.

How do I get to Hannover Messe from the airport?

By road it is about 35 km via the A352 and A37, typically 30 to 40 minutes, and 60 to 90 minutes on busy fair days. By rail you change at the Hauptbahnhof, where extra trains and Stadtbahn services run to the Messe during major fairs, though they are heavily used. A RYDES chauffeur drops you at the Messe entrance you name. See HAJ to Messe Hannover.

Should I book early for Hannover Messe week?

Yes. Hannover Messe runs from 5 to 8 April 2027, and cars for fair weeks are reserved well ahead because hotels across the region fill at the same time. RYDES takes reservations up to a year out. Book as soon as your hotel is confirmed. See Hannover Messe transport.

Is hourly hire better than one-way rides during a fair?

Often, yes. During fairs, hotels are spread across the region, from Laatzen to Celle, and a car held by the hour waits for you at the halls instead of you queuing for a ride back at closing time. Hourly hire has a two-hour minimum in 30-minute increments. See hourly chauffeur hire in Hanover.

Where does my chauffeur meet me at Hannover Airport?

The free default is the short-stay pickup area in front of the terminals or car park P1, P2 or P3, whichever is named in the message your chauffeur sends before you land. P3 is closest to Terminal C. Meet and greet inside arrivals is a paid add-on. Details are on HAJ airport transfers.

Which terminal will I arrive at in Hanover?

Hannover Airport has Terminals A, B and C in one connected complex. Terminal C, reopened in June 2020 after renovation, mainly handles non-Schengen flights. The Airport Service Center is in Terminal B on the arrivals level. Check your booking on the day, as terminal use can change.

Are VAT and airport charges included in the price?

Yes. Every RYDES price in Hanover includes the 19 percent VAT that applies to Mietwagen, and any HAJ forecourt or short-term parking charge incurred for your pickup. Germany has no Autobahn toll for cars. The only cost outside the quote is parking you ask for elsewhere. See Hanover taxi versus chauffeur.

Why is the VAT rate different from a taxi?

German taxis charge VAT at the reduced 7 percent rate on qualifying trips. Pre-booked chauffeur cars are licensed as Mietwagen and charge the standard 19 percent, as the Federal Fiscal Court (Bundesfinanzhof) confirmed in 2014. The 19 percent is already inside every RYDES quote, so it never appears as an extra.

Is there a low-emission zone in Hanover?

No longer. Hanover's Umweltzone has been lifted; the last exemptions expired on 31 December 2024, and from 2025 no emissions sticker is needed to drive in the city. There is also no congestion charge and no car toll on the Autobahn.

Are RYDES chauffeurs in Hanover licensed?

Yes. Every journey is run by a Mietwagen operator licensed under the Personenbeförderungsgesetz through Region Hannover, Team Allgemeine Ordnungsangelegenheiten / Personenbeförderung, at Hildesheimer Straße 20. Drivers hold the Fahrerlaubnis zur Fahrgastbeförderung, the P-Schein. RYDES arranges the trip and the licensed chauffeur operator carries it out.

Why can I not just stop a RYDES car in the street?

Because the law does not allow it. Under section 49(4) of the PBefG, a Mietwagen may only take bookings received at the operator's business seat, may not wait at taxi ranks, and must return to base after each trip unless the next booking is already received. That is also what guarantees you a fixed price and a chauffeur coming specifically for you.

Should I take the S5 train instead?

Sometimes. The S5 reaches the Hauptbahnhof from the airport in about 17 to 18 minutes, roughly every 30 minutes, for €4.70 on a two-zone GVH single from 1 January 2026, or free with a €63 Deutschlandticket. Alone with light luggage and a hotel near the station, it is the better choice. A chauffeur makes sense with luggage, a group, a hotel off the line or a fair-day schedule.

How much free waiting do I get at HAJ?

Sixty minutes from the actual landing time, which covers passport control and baggage. Other pickups include 15 minutes. After that, waiting is charged in 15-minute increments at the class rate, and you are told before it starts. Airport kerb charges during that wait are inside the price.

Can you take me to Wolfsburg and the Autostadt?

Yes. Wolfsburg is about 90 km from central Hanover, around an hour by road, and about 94 km from the airport. It is priced as one fixed fare, or by the hour if you want the car to wait during a tour. See Hanover to Wolfsburg and HAJ to Wolfsburg.

Do you drive to Hamburg or Bremen?

Yes. Hamburg is about 155 km, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes, and Bremen about 125 km, roughly 1 hour 20, each priced as one fare to the address you give. Hanover has no cruise port, so ship passengers travel on to Hamburg or Bremerhaven. See Hanover to Hamburg and the Hamburg chauffeur service.

How far ahead should I book in Hanover?

At least 3 hours before pickup, and up to a year in advance. Book early for EuroTier and EnergyDecentral on 10 to 13 November 2026, the Christmas market from 23 November to 22 December 2026, Hannover Messe on 5 to 8 April 2027 and the Schützenfest from 2 to 11 July 2027. Regular travellers should look at corporate accounts.

Will my chauffeur speak English?

It is not guaranteed. Add a request for an English-speaking chauffeur in the booking notes and the operator confirms it before the day. The pre-arrival message with the chauffeur's details and meeting point is sent to you in writing either way.

What happens if my flight is early, late or the clocks change?

Add your flight number and the pickup follows the aircraft, early or late, at no charge, with free waiting counted from the actual landing. Clocks in Germany go back to Central European Time on 25 October 2026, so check the local time of very early departures booked around that weekend.
