What is a Cologne chauffeur service?

A Cologne chauffeur service is a pre-booked private car at a price fixed before the trip, driven for a Mietwagen operator licensed by the City of Cologne under the federal Passenger Transport Act (Personenbeförderungsgesetz, PBefG). The car cannot be flagged down, it does not queue at taxi ranks, and it is dispatched only against a booking already received at the operator's base. Vehicle class, pickup point and price are settled in advance, whether the trip is a CGN airport transfer, an hourly car service through a fair week or a black car to a meeting in the Innenstadt.

In Cologne the difference is mostly about predictability. The Rhine bridges are the city's bottleneck, the Kölner Ring jams on fair and match days, and a metered taxi keeps counting through all of it. A reserved Cologne car service fare does not move. It already contains the 19 percent VAT that applies to every Mietwagen journey and any short-stay or parking charge at the airport kerb for your pickup. That makes it a practical taxi alternative.

The same booking reaches well beyond the city. CGN to Bonn for meetings in the former capital, CGN to Koelnmesse for imm cologne or Anuga, a transfer to Phantasialand, and longer Cologne to Düsseldorf or Cologne to Brussels runs on one fixed fare. Companies moving people through the Rhineland every month use corporate travel in Cologne for one invoice and traveller profiles on the same licensed fleet.

The airports that serve Cologne.

Cologne Bonn Airport sits between the two cities and handles most trips. Düsseldorf, an hour north, carries the long-haul flights CGN does not.

Times run door to door from the pickup point in a direct private car. Peak means roughly 07:00 to 09:30 and 15:30 to 19:00 on weekdays. Koelnmesse build-up days, FC home matches at the RheinEnergieStadion and Carnival parade days sit outside both columns and should be planned on their own. Düsseldorf times also depend on the motorways around Leverkusen, where the second new A1 Rhine bridge is still to come.

Where your chauffeur actually meets you.

German arrivals kerbs are short-stay zones behind barriers, not places to idle. So the free pickup is a named spot your chauffeur gives you before you land, and being met inside is the paid upgrade.

Cologne Bonn Airport.

Cologne Bonn has two terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and handled about 10.1 million passengers in 2025, still more than two million below its 2019 level. Directly in front of the terminals is the Kiss & Fly zone, behind a barrier: the first 10 minutes are free once a day, then a stay of up to 15 minutes costs €8, up to 20 minutes €11, and €3 for every further five minutes. From the second entry the same day it is €5 per five minutes, with one hour the maximum.

Short-term parking costs €7 an hour in Parkhaus 1 at Terminal 1, €6 in Parkhaus 2 at Terminal 2 and €4 in Parkhaus 3, about 350 metres from Terminal 2. Chauffeurs meeting a passenger inside use P1 or P2. Whichever your pickup needs, that charge is already inside a RYDES price. Group minibuses use P-Nord, about 150 metres from Terminal 2. Timings into town are on CGN to Cologne Cathedral.

  • Standard pickup, the free defaultAt the Kiss & Fly area or the car park your chauffeur names in the pre-arrival message, a short walk from your terminal exit.
  • Meet and greet, a paid add-onChauffeur waiting in arrivals with your name, parked in P1 or P2, useful with heavy bags, children or a first visit.
  • Business aviationPrivate flights are handled by CAS Cologne Aviation Service at Hangar 3; your chauffeur collects there, not at the terminals.

Düsseldorf Airport.

For long-haul arrivals, many Cologne travellers land at Düsseldorf, about 60 km north of the Dom. The drive is 45 to 55 minutes off-peak and up to 85 minutes when the motorways around Leverkusen are slow. It is priced as one fixed transfer, with the same 60 minutes of free waiting from touchdown as at CGN.

Your chauffeur confirms the exact meeting point at Düsseldorf in the message sent before you land, and any short-stay or parking charge for the pickup is inside the fare. If you are staying in Düsseldorf rather than Cologne, the Düsseldorf chauffeur service page covers that city. The southbound run is on Cologne to Düsseldorf Airport.

The Rhine landing stages.

Cologne has 17 landing stages for river cruise ships and 16 for excursion boats, and handles thousands of cruise calls a year. The Frankenwerft stage on the Altstadt embankment is under ten minutes on foot from the Dom forecourt, which is why so many itineraries start or finish there.

The embankment itself is pedestrian-heavy, so your chauffeur names the nearest point a car can reach in the pre-arrival message and meets you there or at the gangway with meet and greet. Cruise luggage is why most people book a Van. Times and pairings are on Cologne river cruise transfers.

The CGN tariffs and car park names above were checked against public sources in October 2026 and change from time to time. Terminal assignments also move between airlines, so confirm yours from your booking, and treat your chauffeur's message as the authority on where to walk.

Licence, VAT and the airport kerb.

Germany has no car tolls on its Autobahns and no congestion charge in any city. What shapes a Cologne fare is the licence the car runs under, the rate of VAT it pays and the airport's short-stay tariff.

Every RYDES car in Cologne is a Mietwagen, licensed under section 49(4) of the Personenbeförderungsgesetz. The rule is simple: the booking must reach the operator's business seat before the trip, the car may not be hailed or wait at a taxi rank, and after each journey it returns to base unless the next booking is already in (the Rückkehrpflicht). The licence comes from the City of Cologne, and the driver holds the Fahrerlaubnis zur Fahrgastbeförderung, the passenger transport permit known as the P-Schein; since 2021 new applicants prove professional competence rather than local street knowledge. For you this means the car is always pre-booked, the price is agreed before you get in, and the chauffeur is coming for you by name. It is also why you will never find a RYDES car on the street. RYDES arranges the trip; the licensed chauffeur operator carries it out.

The rules are enforced. In 2025 the city's Ordnungsamt checked 185 company premises and ran 730 road checks, finding 304 return-to-base violations and opening 366 fine proceedings. Since 1 November 2025 it has matched data with Uber and Bolt, 140 non-compliant vehicles were taken off platforms during 2025, and more checks are planned for 2026. Separately, the city set a Mietwagen minimum fare, no more than 20 percent below the taxi tariff, from 1 June 2026. On 24 July 2026 the Verwaltungsgericht Köln (18 L 1226/26) suspended it in interim proceedings as likely unlawful, and an appeal is possible. Its status stays open while the case continues. RYDES fares are fixed in advance either way.

Taxis in Germany pay VAT at the reduced 7 percent rate, which helps on short local fares. Mietwagen pay the standard 19 percent, as the Federal Fiscal Court (BFH) confirmed in 2014, and that 19 percent is inside every RYDES price. The CGN Kiss & Fly or car park charge for your pickup is treated as an airport fee and included too. Inside the Umweltzone, which since October 2019 also covers Rodenkirchen, Lindenthal, Ehrenfeld and parts of Nippes, Mülheim and Kalk, cars need the green sticker, and every operator's car carries it. Cologne has no city-wide diesel ban.

Routing is the operator's decision rather than yours: a chauffeur heading from CGN to Deutz on a fair morning may stay on the right bank rather than crossing the Rhine twice, and neither choice changes what you were quoted. The full comparison against a metered fare is on Cologne taxi versus chauffeur.

How long it really takes.

Distance in Cologne is rarely the problem. The Rhine is. Its road bridges are the pinch points, several face years of renovation, and the Kölner Ring around them fills up quickly.

Typical door-to-door driving times on common Cologne routes, for a direct private vehicle.
RouteOff-peakWeekday peakWhat moves it
CGN to the Dom and Altstadt20 to 25 min30 to 45 min16 km, ending with a Rhine bridge into the Altstadt
CGN to Koelnmesse and Deutz17 to 22 min30 to 40 min14.5 km, no river crossing; longer on fair build-up and opening days
CGN to Bonn centre25 to 30 min35 to 50 min24 km south; the approach into Bonn slows at peak
CGN to the RheinEnergieStadion25 to 30 min35 to 50 min25 km to Müngersdorf; match days are a category of their own
CGN to the BayArena, Leverkusen20 to 25 min30 to 45 min22 km north on the Kölner Ring towards Leverkusen
CGN to Phantasialand, Brühl28 to 35 min40 to 55 min34 km round the southern Ring; summer weekends run long
CGN to Königsallee, Düsseldorf42 to 50 min60 to 80 min54 km north past Leverkusen, where the A1 bridge works continue
CGN to Aachen58 to 65 min75 to 95 min84 km west towards the Dutch and Belgian borders
Dom to Düsseldorf Airport45 to 55 min60 to 85 min60 km north; allow the upper end for a long-haul departure

Bridges move these numbers more than the hour does. The Mülheimer Brücke switches to its renovated south side on 22 October 2026 and then spends about two more years on the north side. The Zoobrücke carries more than 100,000 vehicles a day at a 50 km/h limit. The Severinsbrücke is due for renovation from 2030 to 2035 and the Deutzer Brücke from 2036 to 2040. On the A1, the first new Leverkusen bridge has been open since early 2024 and the second follows once the old one is demolished. For a flight you cannot miss on a Messe or match day, add half the off-peak time again.

Leaving the city.

When you should not book us.

Cologne Bonn has its own S-Bahn and ICE station, and for some trips the train is simply the better choice.

Travelling light to a hotel near the Dom, the S19 reaches Köln Hbf in about 14 minutes and runs roughly every 20 minutes, next to the Dom. If you already hold a Deutschlandticket, €63 a month in 2026, the S-Bahn is covered and the ride costs you nothing extra. Long-distance trains also stop at the airport's ICE station, which can beat a long road transfer when you have one bag and the destination is near a station.

A chauffeur is worth the price when the train is not: bags for a river cruise, three or more people, small children, a first flight before the S-Bahn gets going, a destination the line does not serve such as the Messe halls on a build-up day, Phantasialand or a Bonn ministry, a day with several stops, or Carnival when the centre's roads and stations are both overrun. That is most of why people book us, but not every trip, and we would rather say so. The full comparison is on Cologne taxi versus chauffeur.

Should I fly into Cologne Bonn or Düsseldorf?

For most European and leisure flights, Cologne Bonn (CGN) is closer: about 16 km and 20 to 25 minutes off-peak from the Dom. Düsseldorf (DUS) is about 60 km away, 45 to 55 minutes off-peak and up to 85 at peak, but offers long-haul routes CGN does not. Both are priced as fixed transfers. Compare CGN to Cologne Cathedral with Cologne to Düsseldorf Airport.

Where does my chauffeur meet me at CGN?

The free standard pickup is at the Kiss & Fly area in front of Terminals 1 and 2 or in the car park your chauffeur names in the message sent before you land. Meet and greet inside arrivals is a paid add-on, with the chauffeur parked in P1 or P2. Any Kiss & Fly or parking charge for your pickup is inside the price. Details are on the CGN airport transfer page.

What does the CGN Kiss & Fly zone cost?

The first 10 minutes are free once a day. After that, up to 15 minutes costs €8, up to 20 minutes €11, and €3 for each further five minutes. From the second entry on the same day it is €5 per five minutes, up to one hour. For a RYDES pickup the charge is treated as an airport fee and already included in your fare.

Are RYDES cars in Cologne licensed?

Yes. Every car is a Mietwagen run by an operator licensed by the City of Cologne under section 49(4) of the Personenbeförderungsgesetz, and every chauffeur holds the passenger transport permit (Fahrerlaubnis zur Fahrgastbeförderung, the P-Schein). The City of Cologne's Ordnungsamt checks Mietwagen operators on the road and at their premises. RYDES arranges the trip and the licensed operator carries it out.

Why can I not stop a RYDES car on the street?

Because German law does not allow it. A Mietwagen may only carry passengers whose booking reached the operator's base in advance, may not wait at taxi ranks, and must return to base after each trip unless the next booking is already in. That is why every RYDES trip is pre-booked, the price is agreed first, and the chauffeur arriving has been sent for you specifically.

Is there a minimum fare for chauffeur cars in Cologne?

Not one that can be stated as settled. Cologne introduced a Mietwagen minimum fare of no more than 20 percent below the taxi tariff from 1 June 2026, but on 24 July 2026 the Verwaltungsgericht Köln suspended it in interim proceedings (18 L 1226/26) as likely unlawful. An appeal is possible. Either way, a RYDES fare is fixed in advance.

Is VAT included in the price?

Yes. Chauffeur cars in Germany pay the standard 19 percent VAT, as the Federal Fiscal Court confirmed in 2014, and it is inside every RYDES price. Taxis pay the reduced 7 percent rate, which is one reason a short taxi hop can cost less. Airport short-stay charges for your pickup are included as well. See Cologne taxi versus chauffeur.

Are there tolls or a congestion charge in Cologne?

No. Germany has no car toll on its motorways and no congestion charge anywhere. Cologne does have an Umweltzone requiring a green sticker, which since October 2019 also covers Rodenkirchen, Lindenthal, Ehrenfeld and parts of Nippes, Mülheim and Kalk. Every operator's car carries the sticker, and there is no city-wide diesel ban.

How long does CGN to the city centre take?

About 20 to 25 minutes off-peak to the Dom and Altstadt, and 30 to 45 minutes at weekday peak, over roughly 16 km. Koelnmesse in Deutz is 17 to 22 minutes off-peak because it needs no river crossing, but takes longer on fair days. See CGN to Cologne Cathedral and CGN to Koelnmesse.

Should I just take the S-Bahn from the airport?

Sometimes, and we would rather tell you. Travelling alone with light luggage to a hotel near the Dom, the S19 reaches Köln Hbf in about 14 minutes and runs roughly every 20 minutes. The Deutschlandticket, €63 a month in 2026, covers it. A chauffeur makes more sense with cruise luggage, several people, children, an early flight or a destination away from the line.

How do river cruise transfers work in Cologne?

Your chauffeur meets you at the nearest car access to your landing stage, named in the pre-arrival message, or at the gangway with meet and greet. The Frankenwerft stage below the Altstadt is under ten minutes' walk from the Dom forecourt. CGN to the Frankenwerft is typically 20 to 30 minutes off-peak. See Cologne river cruise transfers.

Can you handle Koelnmesse trade fair weeks?

Yes, and book early. imm cologne runs 19 to 22 January 2027, ISM 31 January to 3 February 2027 and Anuga 9 to 13 October 2027. Many exhibitors book an hourly chauffeur with a two-hour minimum so the car waits between the halls, hotels and dinners. See Koelnmesse chauffeur service and hourly chauffeur hire.

What happens to traffic during Carnival?

The season opens on 11 November 2026, and the street days run from Weiberfastnacht on Thursday 4 February 2027 to Rosenmontag on 8 February and Ash Wednesday on 10 February. Parade days close roads across the centre, so your chauffeur may set the pickup at the edge of the closures. Groups usually book a Van. See Carnival transport in Cologne.

Do you drive to Bonn, Düsseldorf and Phantasialand?

Yes, each as one fixed fare. Bonn is about 30 km from the Dom and 30 to 45 minutes; Düsseldorf about 41 km and 40 minutes to an hour; Phantasialand in Brühl about 23 km. From CGN, Bonn centre is 25 to 30 minutes off-peak. See CGN to Bonn, Cologne to Düsseldorf and CGN to Phantasialand.

Can you take me to Brussels, Maastricht or Amsterdam?

Usually, yes. Cross-border runs are confirmed by dispatch at booking rather than sold automatically. From the Dom, Maastricht is about 106 km and 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 45, Brussels about 212 km and 2 hours 45 to 3 hours 15, and Amsterdam about 265 km and 3 hours 30 to 4 hours. See Cologne to Brussels and Cologne to Amsterdam.

Do Cologne chauffeurs speak English?

Do not assume it. If you need an English-speaking chauffeur, say so in the booking notes and the operator confirms whether one is assigned before the trip.

What if my flight is early, late or my clocks are wrong?

Add the flight number and the pickup follows the aircraft automatically, with the 60 free minutes starting at actual touchdown. Bookings are made in local Central European Time. Clocks go back one hour on 25 October 2026, so check the time on any early-morning departure booked across that weekend. Book at least 3 hours ahead; reservations open up to a year out.
