What is a Dubai chauffeur service?

In Dubai the category has a specific regulatory meaning. A chauffeur service is a limousine operation licensed by the Roads and Transport Authority, using vehicles registered for that purpose and drivers holding the RTA professional driver permit. It is booked in advance at an agreed price. It is a separate licence class from the metered RTA taxi, and separate again from the ride-hailing apps.

The practical difference shows up at the airport and in the heat. A limousine booking has a named driver assigned before you land, a vehicle waiting in the designated pickup area rather than a queue, and a price that was fixed when you booked. Tolls, the airport access charge and the taxes are inside it. Between May and September, when standing outside for ten minutes is genuinely unpleasant, knowing exactly where the car is stops being a convenience and starts being the point.

Which airport, and which terminal.

Dubai is served by two airports that are an hour apart, and the busier of the two has a terminal that is not attached to the other two. Getting this wrong is the single most common cause of a missed pickup here.

Airports covered by RYDES from Dubai, with approximate distance and typical door-to-door driving time to Downtown Dubai.

Al AinAAN 135 km95 to 125 min120 to 160 minOne Limited regional traffic, and the inland route to Oman

DXB and Al Maktoum are roughly sixty kilometres apart with no direct rail link between them. A self-connection between the two means clearing immigration, reclaiming bags, an hour on the road and a full check-in at the other end. Four hours is a working minimum and five is comfortable. The RTA has begun designing a dedicated express rail line between the two, but it is years from carrying anyone.

Where your driver actually meets you.

Dubai International handles pre-booked cars in a way that surprises most first-time arrivals, and one of its terminals is not where you think it is.

Terminal 2 is a different place.

DXB runs three passenger terminals. Terminal 3 belongs to Emirates and covers Concourses A, B and C. Terminal 1 handles most other international airlines through Concourse D. Terminal 2 sits on the opposite side of the airfield, three or four kilometres away by road, and is used by flydubai and a number of regional carriers.

Landside, Terminal 2 is effectively a separate airport. You cannot walk to it and there is no quick way across. Telling a driver only that you are landing at Dubai International is not enough information, and it is the most frequent reason a pickup goes wrong here. Give the terminal, or better, give the flight number and let the operator work it out.

  • No kerbside collectionDXB does not permit pre-booked cars to wait at the arrivals doors. Your driver uses the designated pickup area in the terminal car park and meets you on foot as you come out of the baggage hall.
  • Meet and greet, a paid add-onDriver waiting at the meeting point beyond customs holding your name. In a terminal the size of T3, and in August, this earns its fee more reliably than almost anywhere else we operate.
  • The taxi rank is a different productAn RTA taxi from the rank is metered and carries an airport starting surcharge. It is often cheaper for a short hop into Deira, and it cannot hold a fixed price or wait an hour for a delayed flight.

Al Maktoum.

DWC has a single passenger terminal, which makes the arrival itself simple. What is not simple is the distance: thirty-seven kilometres from Downtown and closer to the Marina than to the old city. There is no metro connection, and the road route crosses toll gates.

The airport is midway through an expansion intended to eventually make it the primary field for Dubai. Dubai confirmed in mid-2026 that the first phase remains on programme for operations from 2032, so for most of this decade DWC stays what it is now: a straightforward secondary airport that is a long way out.

Al Maktoum · 900 × 600

Private aviation.

Business aviation in Dubai is concentrated at Al Maktoum, where several handling agents operate their own terminals with separate entrances and their own immigration arrangements. Al Bateen in Abu Dhabi serves the capital in the same way.

Naming the airport is not sufficient for a private arrival. Give the tail number and the handling agent, because the difference between two facilities at the same airport can be several kilometres of perimeter road and a security gate that will not admit a car without prior notice. Airside vehicle access should never be assumed and is arranged in advance where the operator permits it at all.

Terminal arrangements above were checked against public sources in September 2026. Airline terminal assignments at DXB do move, so confirm yours from the boarding pass on the day rather than from a previous trip.

Salik, and what it does to a fare.

Dubai's toll system charges by the gate rather than by the zone, and since 2025 it charges differently depending on the hour. It is the reason two identical journeys can cost different amounts on a meter.

Salik is barrier-free and automatic. Roughly ten gates sit across Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road and the creek crossings, and a vehicle is charged each time it passes one. Until 2025 the rate was flat. It is now time-based: a higher charge during the morning and evening peaks, a lower one through the middle of the day and the evening, and no charge at all through the small hours. Sundays carry the lower rate all day, and a five per cent VAT was applied to crossings from June 2026.

Two consequences matter to anyone arriving here. The first is that a route from DXB to the Marina crosses several gates while a route into Deira crosses none, so distance alone does not predict the toll component. The second is that a great many long-haul flights land at DXB between one and six in the morning, which is precisely the window when Salik charges nothing. Neither fact reaches you on a fixed-price booking, but both explain why metered quotes for apparently similar journeys diverge so widely.

How Dubai road and airport charges reach the passenger, by way of travelling. Rates are set by the RTA and Salik Company and are revised periodically.

Salik operates only in Dubai. Abu Dhabi runs a separate system called Darb, which reads number plates rather than using a windscreen tag, and the northern emirates have no road tolls at all. A single Dubai to Abu Dhabi run therefore passes through two unrelated schemes, which is exactly the sort of thing a fixed fare exists to absorb.

How long it really takes.

Dubai moves quickly outside the peaks and then stops almost completely inside them. The gap between the two columns below is wider here than in most cities.

The Dubai to Sharjah figures are not a misprint. The border between the two emirates carries an enormous daily commuter flow in both directions, and a journey that takes half an hour at eleven in the morning can take two hours at six in the evening. If a Sharjah appointment is fixed, build the buffer in rather than hoping.

Two things visitors do not expect.

Dubai has a working week and a calendar that behave differently from most of the markets our passengers fly in from. Both change how a day should be planned.

The weekend is Saturday and Sunday.

The UAE moved to a Saturday and Sunday weekend in 2022, with Friday a shortened working day. Visitors still arrive expecting Friday and Saturday, and plan meetings accordingly.

Friday has its own traffic shape. Roads are quiet through the morning, congest sharply around midday prayers, and fill again in the evening. A Friday lunchtime transfer across the city is not the easy run the empty morning suggests it will be. Sunday, meanwhile, is a full working day and carries a normal Monday-style peak, which catches out anyone scheduling a Sunday departure as though it were a rest day.

Friday traffic · 900 × 600
Sheikh Zayed Road in low afternoon light

Ramadan changes the road.

During the holy month the working day shortens, the toll schedule shifts its free overnight window, and the hour before sunset becomes the most congested period of the entire year as the city travels home to break the fast simultaneously.

An airport run scheduled to arrive twenty minutes before iftar is a bad plan, and no chauffeur can rescue it. Book either well clear of sunset or comfortably after it, when the roads empty out to a degree you will not see at any other time. Our operators here plan around this automatically, but if you are choosing your own flight times it is worth knowing before you book the ticket rather than after.

Ramadan evening · 900 × 600
Quiet road after sunset, lit skyline

Ramadan moves roughly eleven days earlier each year against the Gregorian calendar, and the exact toll timings are confirmed by the authorities shortly before it begins. Ask dispatch when booking within the month and you will be told the current arrangement rather than last year's.

Leaving the emirate.

A long-distance run carries one agreed fare for the whole journey, with both toll systems and any border-adjacent congestion already absorbed.

SUV is chosen more often in Dubai than in any European market we serve, and usually for the right reason: long-haul arrivals bring more luggage, and families travel together. It is still worth checking the numbers rather than assuming. Two people with two cases are comfortably inside Business, and paying for the larger car buys nothing but a higher seating position.

What the Dubai price contains.

No meter, no gate-by-gate reckoning at the end, and no surcharge that appears because you happened to be collected from an airport.

Salik crossings
Every gate on your route is counted when the fare is calculated, at whichever rate applies to the hour you are travelling. It does not appear again afterwards.
Darb, across the border
Abu Dhabi runs its own toll scheme on a different technology. On a Dubai to Abu Dhabi booking both systems sit inside the one number.
Airport access and parking
The cost of the vehicle entering and waiting in the designated pickup area is ours. There is no airport starting surcharge on a pre-booked fare.
Gratuity is yours to decide
Your driver agreed what this journey pays before accepting it, so nothing about their income depends on it. A tip is offered at payment, and declining is a visible option.
An hour of waiting after landing
Sixty minutes from wheels-down, tracked against the aircraft. At DXB in peak season that allowance is used rather than wasted. Fifteen minutes at every other pickup.
Air conditioning that is already running
A small thing eleven months of the year and the entire point in August. The car is cooled before you reach it, not after.
Flight tracking and free cancellation
The pickup follows the aircraft at no cost. Transfers cancel or change free up to an hour before, hourly bookings twenty-four hours before.
A licensed local operator
Every vehicle is run by an RTA-licensed limousine operator, with drivers holding the professional driver permit and vehicles registered for hire.

When you should not book us.

Dubai has excellent, cheap alternatives, and there are journeys where a chauffeur is simply the wrong tool.

The Metro Red Line runs from Terminals 1 and 3 straight down Sheikh Zayed Road to Downtown, the Marina and beyond, for a fare that rounds to nothing against any car. Travelling alone with a carry-on during the evening peak, it will not merely match a car, it will beat it, because it does not sit in the traffic that the car sits in. For a short hop from DXB into Deira or Bur Dubai, a metered taxi from the rank is cheaper and perfectly good.

The case for booking a car is different: arriving at three in the morning with a family and four cases, moving between several appointments in a working day, travelling to somewhere the Metro does not reach, needing child seats fitted before you land, crossing an emirate border, or arriving in July when the walk from a station exit to a hotel entrance is a genuine consideration. Most of our Dubai work falls into those categories. Not all travel does.

Dubai questions.

If yours is not here, dispatch answers around the clock at +1 888 881 7933 or support@rydes.co.

Which Dubai airport will I land at?

Almost certainly Dubai International, which sits eight kilometres from the centre in Garhoud. Al Maktoum, in Jebel Ali to the south west, handles low-cost and charter traffic along with most business aviation, and is thirty-seven kilometres out. The two are around sixty kilometres apart and are entirely separate airports, so check your booking rather than assuming.

Why does the terminal matter so much at DXB?

Because Terminal 2 is not attached to the other two. It sits across the airfield, three or four kilometres away by road, and serves flydubai and several regional carriers. Terminal 3 is Emirates only and Terminal 1 takes most other international airlines. Landside there is no quick way between Terminal 2 and the rest, so a driver sent to the wrong one is not a short walk away. Give us the flight number and the terminal is resolved for you.

Where does my driver meet me at DXB?

At the meeting point in the arrivals hall, after you clear immigration and collect your bags. Dubai International does not allow pre-booked cars to wait at the arrivals kerb, so the vehicle sits in the designated pickup area within the terminal car park and your driver walks in to find you. Meet and greet with a name board beyond customs is a paid add-on and is worth taking at Terminal 3.

What is Salik and will I be charged for it?

Salik is Dubai's barrier-free toll system, with around ten gates on the main highways and creek crossings. A vehicle is charged each time it passes one. On a RYDES booking every crossing on your route is counted when the fare is calculated, so nothing is added afterwards. On a metered taxi or a ride-hailing trip the gates are added to your total at the end.

Why do two similar journeys cost different amounts?

Because Salik charges by the gate rather than by distance, and since 2025 it has charged different amounts at different hours, with a higher rate during the morning and evening peaks and none at all through the small hours. A run into Deira crosses no gates. A run to the Marina crosses several. That is why metered quotes for journeys of comparable length can diverge sharply, and why a fixed fare is easier to plan against.

Are your Dubai drivers licensed?

Yes. Every vehicle is operated by a limousine company licensed by the Roads and Transport Authority, and every driver holds the RTA professional driver permit required for paid passenger transport. Licensing and insurance are verified before an operator can take a booking, rather than checked ride by ride.

How is this different from an RTA taxi?

Different licence class, different product. A taxi is metered, hailed or taken from a rank, and carries a starting surcharge at the airport. A limousine booking is arranged in advance with a named driver, a specific vehicle class and a price agreed before you travel, and it will wait an hour for a delayed flight without charging for it. For a ten-minute run into Bur Dubai the taxi is usually cheaper and entirely sensible.

How long does DXB to Downtown take?

Fifteen to twenty-five minutes outside the peaks, and thirty to fifty inside them. The Marina and Palm Jumeirah run considerably longer, at thirty to forty-five minutes off-peak and up to seventy-five in the evening peak. Deira and Bur Dubai are the quickest destinations from the airport and cross no toll gates on the way.

Can you transfer me between DXB and Al Maktoum?

Yes, and it takes forty-five to sixty-five minutes without traffic and up to a hundred in the evening peak. If you are self-connecting between the two airports on separate tickets, allow four hours as an absolute minimum and five if you are checking bags, because you will clear immigration, reclaim luggage, drive sixty kilometres and check in again from scratch.

What happens during Ramadan?

Working hours shorten, the toll system shifts its free overnight window, and the hour before sunset becomes the heaviest traffic of the year as the whole city travels home at once. Avoid scheduling an airport arrival or a cross-city transfer to land in that window. After sunset the roads clear dramatically. Dispatch will tell you the current arrangements when you book within the month, since the timings are confirmed shortly before it starts.

When is the weekend here?

Saturday and Sunday, with Friday a shortened working day. The UAE changed from a Friday and Saturday weekend in 2022 and visitors still get caught out. Friday traffic is light in the morning, heavy around midday prayers and busy again in the evening. Sunday behaves like a normal working day with a full morning peak, which surprises people scheduling a relaxed Sunday departure.

Can you collect from a private jet terminal?

Yes. Most business aviation in Dubai operates through handling agents at Al Maktoum, each with its own terminal, entrance and passenger processing, and Al Bateen serves Abu Dhabi similarly. Give us the tail number and the handling agent rather than just the airport, because two facilities on the same field can be several kilometres and one security gate apart. Airside vehicle access is arranged in advance where it is permitted at all.

How much waiting time is included?

An hour from the moment the aircraft touches down, measured against the flight rather than the schedule, which covers immigration and the baggage belt. Fifteen minutes at any non-airport pickup. Past the free window the charge runs in quarter-hour blocks at the rate for your vehicle class, and you are told before the first one begins.

Can you take me to Abu Dhabi or the northern emirates?

Yes, on a single fixed fare rather than a meter. Abu Dhabi is around ninety minutes to two and a half hours depending on the hour, and the run passes through two unrelated toll schemes, both of which are inside your fare. Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Al Ain, Ajman and Hatta are all covered, and the northern emirates have no road tolls at all.

Do you provide child seats?

Yes, requested at the time of booking so the operator can fit them before your flight lands. Infant, toddler and booster stages are available and each fitted seat occupies one passenger position. This is one of the clearer advantages over taking a car from the rank, since street taxis here do not generally carry them.

Would the Metro be better?

For some journeys, yes, and we would rather say so. The Red Line runs from Terminals 1 and 3 down Sheikh Zayed Road to Downtown and the Marina, and during the evening peak it beats a car outright because it is not in the traffic. Travelling alone with hand luggage, take it. A car earns its price with a family, with luggage, in the small hours, in high summer, or on a day with several stops.

How far ahead should I book?

Three hours before pickup at minimum, which is what an operator needs to assign a vehicle and brief the driver. Reservations open a year out. Around the major exhibitions and conferences, the Formula One weekend in Abu Dhabi, the winter high season from November to March and the days either side of Eid, vehicles run out well before prices become the limiting factor.

What if my flight is delayed or diverted?

The aircraft is tracked, so a delay moves your pickup on its own and costs nothing, with the free hour beginning at the actual landing time. Diversions in this region are most often caused by summer sandstorms or fog, and are handled by dispatch, who re-brief a driver to wherever the aircraft has been sent if the operator covers it. Dispatch is reachable around the clock on +1 888 881 7933.
