What is a Cancun chauffeur service?

A Cancun chauffeur service is a private car and driver reserved in advance at a fixed US dollar price, run by a licensed chauffeur operator that holds a federal tourism transport permit from SICT (Secretaría de Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes) and the airport operator's authorisation to collect passengers at the terminal. It is not a street taxi and it is not an app ride. The car, class and total are agreed before you fly, for a Cancun airport transfer to the Hotel Zone, an hourly car service for a day along the coast, or a private black car to a resort in Costa Mujeres.

Airport rules shape the market here. Ordinary taxis cannot collect passengers directly at Cancun airport, and SICT confirmed in October 2025 that ride-hailing apps, Uber included, are not authorised to pick up at Mexican airports. The right to collect belongs to taxi unions under contract with ASUR, licensed shuttles and authorised tourist-transport companies. A pre-booked Cancun car service from RYDES sits in that last group, and the 16 percent IVA, any toll road on the route and the access charges ASUR levies on operators are already counted in the quote. Our taxi alternative page sets the options side by side.

The same booking reaches well beyond the airport. Run straight down Highway 307 to Playa del Carmen, Akumal or Tulum, out to Costa Mujeres, or to the Puerto Juarez ferry for Isla Mujeres. Day trips to Chichen Itza and Valladolid are quoted as one fare, and teams flying in for incentives can bill it all through corporate travel.

The airports that serve Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

Cancun International handles most of the region's traffic. Tulum's newer airport is now a real choice for the south of the coast, and two other airports fit particular trips.

Times are door to door for a direct private vehicle, not a shared shuttle stopping at other hotels. Peak covers weekday commuter hours and the heaviest changeover days of the December to April high season. Terminal 1 at Cancun, used for charter and private traffic, is being remodelled with no confirmed reopening, so do not plan around it. Storm days in hurricane season sit outside both columns.

Getting from the aircraft to the car.

Cancun airport is busy, spread across three working terminals, and has a gauntlet of sales desks between the baggage belt and the door. Tulum is smaller and simpler, but the same rules on who may collect you apply at both.

Cancun International.

Cancun airport carried 29.3 million passengers in 2025, 19.5 million of them on international flights. Three terminals are in use. Terminal 2 handles domestic flights and some international ones, including Viva, Volaris, Copa and LATAM. Terminal 3 is the main international building, used by American, Delta, United and other US, Canadian and European airlines. Terminal 4, opened in 2017 and now being expanded, serves Aeromexico, Air France and WestJet among others. A free shuttle runs between the terminals roughly every ten minutes.

Airlines do switch terminals, so trust your boarding pass. Your chauffeur waits outside the terminal exit doors holding a sign with your name, and confirms the exact door in the message sent before you land. ASUR, the company that runs the airport, charges operators for terminal positions, for airport ID cards issued to drivers and for kerbside access. Those costs are inside a RYDES fare. The drive itself is covered on Cancun airport to the Hotel Zone.

  • Meet and greet, a paid add-onExtra hands with bags and a closer meeting point, where the terminal allows it; the operator confirms what applies to your flight.

The desks before the door.

Between baggage claim and the exit at Cancun, you pass a row of booths offering transport, tours and sometimes a free ride. Many are timeshare sales operations, and the ride comes with a presentation. You do not need to stop or say who is collecting you. Keep walking until you are through the exit doors, because a pre-booked chauffeur is never waiting inside that corridor.

If you cannot see your chauffeur once outside, call dispatch on the number in your confirmation rather than accepting help from someone who approaches you. At Tulum the hall is smaller, but the approach is the same.

Tulum airport.

Tulum airport opened in December 2023 inland from the town. Its winter 2026–27 schedule lists ten airlines, with flights from Calgary, Montreal, Toronto, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, Houston, Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara. For the Tulum hotel zone or Akumal, it saves a long stretch of road.

Pickup follows the same federal rules as Cancun. Only concession holders and permitted operators collect at the terminal, and your chauffeur waits outside the exit with your name. Timing detail is on Tulum airport to Tulum.

Terminal and airline facts above were checked against public sources in October 2026. Cancun airlines change terminals with little notice, so use your boarding pass on the day, and treat the message from your chauffeur as the final word on where to walk.

IVA, tolls, airport costs and Visitax.

Four charges touch a Cancun trip. Three of them are inside a RYDES price. The fourth is a state visitor fee that every foreign traveller pays directly to Quintana Roo, whatever transport they use.

Mexican fares carry IVA, the national value added tax, at 16 percent. The airport recovers its costs from every company collecting at the terminal. Toll roads, called cuotas, are rare on the coast: Highway 307 from Cancun to Tulum has no tolls, and the new Nichupte bridge into the Hotel Zone has no toll reported. Inland is different. The toll road towards Chichen Itza and Merida costs MXN 248 per car from April 2026, and on a day trip that uses it, the toll is part of your quote.

Visitax is separate. Quintana Roo charges a visitor fee to every foreign tourist, children included, paid online at visitax.gob.mx, which issues a QR code as proof. In 2026 it is 2.5 UMA, about MXN 283 per person. It is a government charge on the traveller, not a transport cost, so it is never in our fare. The same goes for entry at Parque del Jaguar in Tulum (MXN 100 for foreigners), the Tulum archaeological zone (MXN 165) and Chichen Itza (MXN 676 general entry in 2026).

A chauffeur car on a tourism permit runs on federal plates, and on 28 June 2026 Mexico's Supreme Court ruled that only federal authorities may inspect tourist transport on federal plates. Public transport inside Cancun itself moved under IMOVEQROO, the Instituto de Movilidad del Estado de Quintana Roo, in May 2026. The full comparison against the airport's other options is on Cancun taxi versus chauffeur.

Drive times from the airport.

Cancun airport sits at the hinge between the Hotel Zone to the north and Highway 307 running south. Short runs are short. The long run to Tulum is where traffic, checkpoints and roadworks start to count.

The Puente Vehicular Nichupte, an 11.2 km bridge across the lagoon, opened on 6 May 2026 and runs from 04:30 to midnight with a reversible lane: towards the Hotel Zone from 04:30 to 16:00, towards downtown from 16:30 to midnight. The crossing takes about nine minutes and the bridge closes one Sunday a month. On Highway 307, a 400-metre bridge over a sinkhole between Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos has been under construction since mid-2025, with completion expected in 2026. For a flight home from Tulum or Akumal, plan on the peak column.

Day trips and longer runs.

The Yucatan peninsula rewards a long day in the car. Each of these is quoted as one fixed fare to the address you give, with the toll road inside it when the route uses it.

For a day at Chichen Itza and Valladolid with the car waiting, hourly hire is usually the better booking than two one-way fares. Cancun has no cruise terminal; ships call at Cozumel's Puerta Maya, International Pier and Punta Langosta, and at Costa Maya in the south of the state.

What a Cancun fare covers.

One figure in US dollars, settled before you travel. Nothing is added at the kerb and nothing is added after you arrive.

IVA and tolls
The 16 percent IVA and any cuota on the route, such as the MXN 248 toll road towards Chichen Itza and Merida, are counted in the quote.
Airport access costs
The terminal position, driver ID card and kerbside charges ASUR levies on operators at Cancun are inside the fare. Tulum is handled the same way.
A tip only if you want one
The chauffeur's pay for the job was agreed before they accepted it. You will see one optional gratuity prompt at payment, and declining it changes nothing.
Your flight, watched
Share the flight number and dispatch follows it. Early or late, the pickup moves and the price does not.
An hour at the airport
Sixty minutes free from the real touchdown time, enough for immigration and customs. Fifteen minutes free at hotels and other pickups.
Pickup outside the exit
Being met outside the terminal doors with a name sign is free. Meet and greet is a paid add-on.
Cancel free up to 24 hours
Changes and cancellations are free until 24 hours before pickup. Inside that window the full fare applies, because a car and chauffeur are already set aside for you.
A licensed operator
Every Cancun vehicle is run by an operator holding the SICT federal tourism transport permit and the airport's access authorisation, with insurance checked before they take bookings.
Child seats, pets, language
Child seats are a paid add-on, supplied and then fitted by the parent. Pets are a paid add-on and service animals ride free. To ask for an English-speaking chauffeur, say so in the booking notes and the operator confirms.
What sits outside the fare
Visitax, park and archaeological site entry fees, which each traveller pays to the government, and paid parking at a stop where you ask the car to wait.

When you should not book us.

Cancun has a working bus network and, since August 2026, a train back on the coast. For some travellers they are the sensible choice, and the numbers are below.

ADO buses serve all the terminals at Cancun airport. They stop at ADO stations, not hotels. Cancun airport to Tulum costs roughly USD 15 to 25 and takes about two and a half hours, with departures every one to two hours that thin out at night. At Tulum airport, ADO runs about eight buses a day into Tulum for MXN 220 to 290, taking around 45 minutes. The Tren Maya station near Cancun airport sits across Highway 180 and is linked to all four terminals by the Conexion Intermodal shuttle bus. The Cancun to Playa del Carmen service restarted in August 2026 with only a few trips a day, leaving Cancun at 06:45 and 10:30, taking about 49 minutes, at an international fare of MXN 232. Playa del Carmen to Tulum is MXN 246.

If you are one person with a backpack, flexible on time and staying near a bus station, take the bus. A chauffeur makes sense with checked luggage, children, a group of three or more, a late-night landing, a resort or villa well away from a station, or a flight home you cannot afford to miss. The full comparison is on Cancun taxi versus chauffeur.

Should I fly into Cancun or Tulum airport?

Choose by where you are staying. Cancun International handles most flights and is closest to the Hotel Zone, downtown, Costa Mujeres, Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen. Tulum airport, opened in December 2023, is about 30 to 35 minutes from Tulum town and a little over an hour from Puerto Aventuras, so it suits Tulum, Akumal and the south of the coast when your airline flies there. See Tulum airport to Tulum.

Where does my chauffeur meet me at Cancun airport?

Outside the terminal exit doors, holding a sign with your name. The chauffeur confirms the exact door in a message before you land. Walk past the transport and tour desks inside and go straight out. Meet and greet is a paid add-on. Terminal detail is on the Cancun airport transfer page.

Which terminal will I arrive at in Cancun?

Terminal 2 handles domestic and some international flights such as Viva, Volaris, Copa and LATAM. Terminal 3 handles American, Delta, United and other US, Canadian and European airlines. Terminal 4 serves Aeromexico, Air France and WestJet among others. Airlines do change terminals, so check your boarding pass. A free shuttle links the terminals about every ten minutes. Terminal 1 is closed for remodelling with no confirmed reopening.

What are the free ride desks in Cancun arrivals?

Between baggage claim and the exit there are booths offering transport and tours, some promising a free ride. Many are timeshare sales pitches. Walk past them; your chauffeur is outside the exit doors with your name.

Can I take an Uber from Cancun airport?

Not from the terminal. In October 2025 SICT confirmed that Uber and other ride-hailing apps are not authorised to pick up passengers at Mexican airports, Cancun included. Ordinary taxis cannot collect at the terminal either; pickup rights belong to ASUR's contracted taxi unions, licensed shuttles and authorised tourist-transport companies, which is where RYDES operators sit.

Are IVA, tolls and airport fees included in the price?

Yes. The 16 percent IVA, any toll road on the route and the access costs ASUR charges operators at the airport are all inside the US dollar price you see at booking. Paid parking, if you ask the car to wait somewhere that charges, is not included. Visitax and site entry fees are also outside the fare. See Cancun taxi versus chauffeur.

Is Visitax included in my transfer?

No. Visitax is a Quintana Roo visitor fee that every foreign tourist pays, children included, online at visitax.gob.mx, which issues a QR code as proof. In 2026 it is 2.5 UMA, about MXN 283 per person. It is a government charge on the traveller, so it is never in a RYDES fare, and nor are site entry fees.

Are your Cancun chauffeurs licensed?

Yes. Every airport pickup is carried out by a licensed chauffeur operator holding the SICT federal tourism transport permit (autotransporte federal de turismo) and the airport's access authorisation, which is what allows the chauffeur to meet you at the terminal. Permits and insurance are checked before an operator receives bookings.

How long is the drive from Cancun airport to the Hotel Zone?

The south end, around km 20, is about 15 km and usually 15 to 20 minutes, up to 35 at busy times. The north end, around km 9, is 25 to 35 minutes and can reach 55. The Nichupte bridge, open since May 2026, can shorten some trips from the downtown side. See Cancun airport to the Hotel Zone.

How long does Cancun airport to Tulum take?

About 120 km on Highway 307, which has no tolls. Allow 1 hour 30 to 2 hours to Tulum town in light traffic, and up to 2 hours 40 at busy times, because Playa del Carmen traffic and checkpoints add 20 to 40 minutes. If your airline flies to Tulum airport, the run into town is 30 to 35 minutes. See Cancun airport to Tulum.

How do I get to Isla Mujeres or Cozumel?

For Isla Mujeres, we drive you to Puerto Juarez, about 22 km and roughly 30 minutes from Cancun airport, where passenger ferries leave about every 30 minutes; vehicles cross from Punta Sam. For Cozumel, we take you to the Playa del Carmen ferry pier, about 40 to 50 minutes from Cancun airport,. See Cancun to Puerto Juarez and Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen.

Can you take me to Chichen Itza for the day?

Yes. Chichen Itza is about 200 km from Cancun on the toll road, usually 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 45 each way. The MXN 248 toll is inside the fare; site entry, MXN 676 general admission in 2026, is not. Many add Valladolid and book by the hour so the car waits, two-hour minimum in 30-minute increments. See Cancun to Chichen Itza and hourly chauffeur hire.

What is the current US travel advisory for Quintana Roo?

As of the advisory dated 29 May 2026, the US State Department rates Quintana Roo at Level 2, Exercise increased caution due to terrorism and crime. Read the current version at travel.state.gov before you travel.

What time zone is Cancun in?

Quintana Roo is on UTC minus 5 all year, known as Zona Sureste, and does not change its clocks. That puts Cancun one hour ahead of Mexico City. Your confirmation shows pickup in local Cancun time.

When should I book, and how far ahead?

Book at least 3 hours before pickup; reservations open up to a year ahead. High season runs from December to April, with Easter and July to August also busy. Semana Santa in 2027 falls from 21 to 28 March, and spring breaks run from late February to early April, so book those dates early. Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. Groups should start at group transportation.

What happens if my flight is delayed, and can I request an English-speaking chauffeur?

With a flight number, dispatch tracks the aircraft, a delay moves the pickup at no cost and the 60 free minutes start at landing; after that, waiting is billed in 15-minute increments and you are told before it begins. To request an English-speaking chauffeur, add it to the booking notes and the operator confirms. Dispatch answers around the clock on +1 888 881 7933.
