What is a Montreal chauffeur service?

A Montreal chauffeur service is private ground transport booked in advance at a fixed price and carried out by a licensed chauffeur operator working under Québec's Act respecting remunerated passenger transportation by automobile. The SAAQ authorises each driver and each vehicle, and the Commission des transports du Québec authorises the operator's transportation system. You cannot hail one on Sainte-Catherine Street. The car, the chauffeur and the total are agreed before the ride, whether that is a YUL airport transfer, an hourly car service in Montreal or a black car to a meeting downtown.

What you are buying is predictability. App fares climb when the A20 backs up, a snowstorm closes lanes or a festival lets out, and at YUL the redevelopment has made the kerb itself unreliable at times. A reserved Montreal car service fare does not move with any of that. It already contains the 5 percent GST, the 9.975 percent QST, the C$0.90 government fee Québec charges on every paid trip, and any bridge toll on the route.

The same booking reaches well past the island. MET airport transfers for Porter flights into Saint-Hubert, cruise transfers from the Old Port, YUL to Laval and the South Shore, and a fixed fare up to Mont-Tremblant or along the river to Quebec City. If you are comparing against a cab, the Montreal taxi alternative page sets out the difference, and teams with regular arrivals can run everything through corporate travel in Montreal.

The airports around Montreal.

One international hub in Dorval, a newly reopened passenger terminal on the South Shore, and a former international airport to the north that now serves private aircraft.

Drive times are door to door from the pickup point in a direct private vehicle. At YUL, peak is not the usual office rush: the airport authority expects the worst congestion between 15:00 and 22:00 while redevelopment work continues, which is why the peak column runs late. A storm, a festival finale or a holiday Friday belongs in a category of its own.

Finding your car at each airport.

Trudeau is in the middle of a long rebuild, so the meeting point is confirmed for each flight rather than printed here. The South Shore terminal is new and small, and Mirabel is private aviation only.

Montréal-Trudeau.

Montréal-Trudeau has a single terminal. Arrivals use the lower level and departures the upper level, and the building is split into domestic, international and US transborder sectors. Flights to the United States clear US preclearance in Montreal before boarding, from transborder gates 72 to 89, so allow for that queue on the way out.

Aéroports de Montréal is rebuilding road access, parking and kerbside operations, and it has been rough. On 24 June 2026, the Fête nationale, traffic backed up badly enough that some passengers abandoned their cars to walk in. ADM expects disruption through summer 2027, worst between 15:00 and 22:00, and has advised travellers to arrive three hours early in peak periods. Because the arrivals layout keeps shifting, your chauffeur confirms the exact door on the arrivals level in the message sent before you land. Drive timing is on YUL to downtown Montreal.

  • Arrivals level, the free defaultThe chauffeur names the door in the pre-arrival message and meets you there once you have your bags.
  • Meet and greet, a paid add-onThe chauffeur waits inside arrivals with your name, which helps after a long-haul flight and a customs hall.
  • Express zones in P4 and P10ADM runs free express drop-off and pick-up zones in lots P4 and P10 from 13:00 to 20:00 daily, with a shuttle from Door 11. If the operator judges it quicker on the day, the message tells you.

Montreal Metropolitan (Saint-Hubert).

MET, long known as Saint-Hubert, opened a new passenger terminal on 15 June 2026 in Longueuil on the South Shore, about 16 km east of downtown. Porter launched service there to Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Hamilton, both Toronto airports, Winnipeg, Charlottetown, Moncton and St. John's, with Vancouver seasonally, and Pascan flies to Saint John.

For anyone staying in Longueuil or Brossard, or heading to the Eastern Townships, MET can save a crossing of the river altogether. For downtown it is a bridge run, priced on MET to downtown Montreal. The terminal is new enough that the pickup arrangement is confirmed by your chauffeur before you land.

Mirabel and private aviation.

Mirabel, about 39 km northwest of downtown in a straight line and roughly 55 km by road, has carried no scheduled passengers since 2004. It handles cargo and general aviation, and the FBO Hélibellule offers customs clearance, which makes it a practical arrival for private aircraft heading to the Laurentians and Mont-Tremblant.

Private aircraft landing at Trudeau use Skyservice in Dorval. In both cases the chauffeur waits at the FBO door rather than on a public kerb, and the tail number does the same job as a flight number for tracking.

Terminal and access details above were checked against public sources in October 2026. YUL kerbside arrangements change as construction phases move, so treat the message from your chauffeur as the authority on where to walk.

Taxes, tolls and the Québec trip fee.

Montreal has no congestion charge. What adds to a fare here is two provincial taxes, a fixed government fee on every paid ride and, on a few routes, a bridge toll.

Québec charges two sales taxes on a chauffeur fare: the federal GST at 5 percent and the provincial QST at 9.975 percent. On top of that, every remunerated passenger trip in the province carries a C$0.90 government fee, the redevance, which applies to taxis, apps and chauffeur cars alike. All three are already inside a RYDES price, and operators must be registered for GST and QST before they carry their first passenger.

Tolls are rare inside the city. The Samuel De Champlain Bridge to the South Shore is free. The two tolled crossings a Montreal chauffeur may use are the A30 bridge between Châteauguay and Vaudreuil, about C$4.40 for a car, and the A25 Olivier-Charbonneau bridge to Laval, which is electronic and priced by time of day. When the route crosses either one, the toll is counted in your quote. Paid parking at a stop where you ask the car to wait is the one cost that sits outside it.

Route choice is the operator's decision rather than yours. A run from YUL to the South Shore might take the Champlain Bridge for free, or the La Fontaine tunnel if traffic favours it; either way the price you agreed is unchanged. The fuller comparison with a metered cab is on Montreal taxi versus chauffeur.

Realistic driving times.

The A20 and A520 link Trudeau to the city, and the evening is when they suffer most. Use the upper end of each range whenever you have a connection to make.

Two pieces of infrastructure shape these numbers in 2026. The La Fontaine tunnel on the A25 is running on reduced lanes with a 4.3 m height limit, and the Île-aux-Tourtes bridge on the A40 at the west end of the island is using dynamic lanes. Snow does the rest. Between December and March, add half the off-peak time again before a flight you cannot afford to miss.

Beyond the island.

Intercity runs are quoted as one fixed fare for the whole trip rather than by the hour, so a slow ski Friday heading north changes your arrival time, not your bill.

A cross-border run needs more than passports. The vehicle has to be operated by a company allowed to carry passengers in both countries, so dispatch confirms Burlington, Lake Placid and any other US trip by hand rather than selling it automatically. The 2026 cruise season brings nearly 50,000 passengers on 17 ships from 16 lines, with 30 embarkation and disembarkation days, so book turnaround days early.

Winter tires are mandatory on every vehicle in Québec from 1 December to 15 March, so any car you book in that window is already fitted for snow. An SUV still makes sense for Tremblant and the Townships in mid-winter. What a Montreal fare covers.

The amount on your confirmation is the amount charged. Nothing is added once you step out.

GST, QST and the trip fee
The 5 percent GST, the 9.975 percent QST and the C$0.90 Québec fee on each paid trip are all in the quoted Canadian dollar total.
Bridge tolls
The A30 and A25 tolls are counted whenever the route crosses them. Airport access fees are treated the same way at YUL, MET and Mirabel.
Gratuity, if you want it
The chauffeur accepted the run at an agreed rate, so their pay does not hang on a tip. You are offered the option once at payment and can say no.
Flight tracking
Share the flight or tail number and the pickup follows the aircraft, early or late, without a fee.
An hour free at the airport
Sixty minutes from actual touchdown, enough for customs and the carousel at YUL. Other pickups include 15 minutes.
Arrivals-level pickup
Being met at the door your chauffeur names is included. Meet and greet inside the hall with a name sign costs extra.
Cancel free up to 24 hours
Any booking can be changed or cancelled without charge until 24 hours before pickup. After that it is charged in full, because a car and chauffeur are reserved for you.
Authorised under Québec law
Each operator works within the SAAQ and Commission des transports du Québec framework, and its authorisations and insurance are checked before it can accept a booking.
Child seats and pets
Child seats can be supplied for a fee and are fitted by the parent. Pets travel for a fee; service animals ride free.
Not included
Paid parking where you ask the car to wait. Everything else is in the price.

When you should not book us.

Montreal's airport bus is cheap, frequent and runs all night, and there are trips where it is the better choice.

Arriving alone with one bag and staying near Berri-UQAM or Lionel-Groulx, take the STM 747. It leaves from Door 28, runs 24 hours a day every 10 to 20 minutes, and costs C$11.25 for a ticket that stays valid for 24 hours on Zone A, which covers the metro too. Bring coins if you plan to pay on board; the driver does not take cards. Since January 2026 the downtown stop is at René-Lévesque and Berri. The REM light rail does not reach the airport yet; its station is scheduled for 2027, and the 815 shuttle to the REM at Des Sources stopped running on 19 October 2026.

A chauffeur is worth paying for when the 747 stops making sense: luggage you cannot drag through the metro, three or more people, small children, a destination off the bus line such as Laval, Brossard or the West Island, several stops in one day, or a YUL arrival at 18:00 during the construction. That is most of why people book us, though not every trip, and saying so is part of the service. The side-by-side numbers are on Montreal taxi versus chauffeur.

Montreal questions.

If yours is not here, dispatch answers around the clock at +1 888 881 7933 or support@rydes.co.

Which Montreal airport will I land at?

Most travellers land at Montréal-Trudeau (YUL) in Dorval, which handles international, US transborder and most domestic flights. Porter's network from Toronto, Halifax, Calgary, Winnipeg and other Canadian cities now also lands at Montreal Metropolitan (MET) in Saint-Hubert on the South Shore, whose new terminal opened on 15 June 2026. Mirabel (YMX) has no scheduled passenger flights and serves private aircraft. See YUL airport transfers and MET airport transfers.

Where will my chauffeur meet me at YUL?

On the arrivals level, which is the lower level of Trudeau's single terminal. Because redevelopment keeps changing the kerbside layout, your chauffeur confirms the exact door in the message sent before you land. Meet and greet inside the arrivals hall with a name sign is a paid add-on. Details are on the YUL airport transfer page.

How bad is the construction at Montréal-Trudeau?

Serious at times. Aéroports de Montréal is rebuilding road access, parking and the kerbside, and on 24 June 2026 congestion was bad enough that some passengers left their cars to walk to the terminal. ADM expects disruption through summer 2027, worst from 15:00 to 22:00, and advises arriving three hours early for departures in peak periods. A REM station is planned for 2027 and new pick-up and drop-off areas for 2028.

Is there a congestion charge or many tolls in Montreal?

There is no congestion charge. The Samuel De Champlain Bridge to the South Shore is toll-free. The tolled crossings are the A30 bridge between Châteauguay and Vaudreuil, about C$4.40 for a car, and the A25 Olivier-Charbonneau bridge to Laval, which charges electronically by time of day. Either toll is inside a RYDES price when the route uses it.

Are GST, QST and the Québec trip fee included?

Yes. The 5 percent GST, the 9.975 percent QST and the C$0.90 government fee that Québec applies to every paid passenger trip are inside the price you are quoted, along with tolls and airport fees. Only paid parking at a stop where you ask the car to wait is outside it. See Montreal taxi versus chauffeur.

Who licenses chauffeur services in Québec?

Québec's Act respecting remunerated passenger transportation by automobile, formerly Bill 17, sets the rules. The SAAQ authorises drivers and vehicles, and the Commission des transports du Québec authorises transportation system operators, with dispatchers registering with the Commission. Drivers need a Class 5 licence held for 12 months, a police certificate and authorised training, and vehicles older than 4 years or past 80,000 km need an annual mechanical inspection.

Do Montreal chauffeurs speak English?

Québec law requires every authorised driver to understand, speak and read French. English is not a legal requirement, so if you need a chauffeur who also speaks English or another language, add it to the booking notes and the operator confirms whether it can be met before the day.

How long is the drive from YUL to downtown Montreal?

About 20 km, usually 20 to 30 minutes off-peak and 40 to 75 minutes when the airport roads are at their worst, which during the current works is roughly 15:00 to 22:00. Old Montreal takes about the same. See YUL to downtown Montreal and YUL to Old Montreal.

Should I just take the 747 bus?

Sometimes, yes. If you are alone with one bag and staying near the bus route, the STM 747 leaves YUL from Door 28 around the clock every 10 to 20 minutes and costs C$11.25, valid 24 hours on Zone A. Pay with coins on board. A chauffeur makes more sense with heavy luggage, a group, small children, a destination off the route, or a late arrival during the construction.

Can I take the REM train from the airport?

Not yet. The REM airport station is scheduled to open in 2027. The 815 bus that linked YUL with the REM at Des Sources ran until 19 October 2026. Until the station opens, the public options from the airport are the STM 747 bus or a car.

How much free waiting do I get at a Montreal airport?

Sixty minutes from the actual landing time, measured against the aircraft, not the timetable, which covers immigration and baggage at YUL. Other pickups include 15 minutes. After that, waiting is billed in 15-minute increments at the class rate, and you hear about it before the clock starts.

Can you drive me to Mont-Tremblant?

Yes. Mont-Tremblant is about 130 km from downtown, usually 1 hour 30 to 2 hours, longer on winter Friday evenings. It is one fixed fare, and winter tires are compulsory in Québec from 1 December to 15 March. Private jets bound for Tremblant often use Mirabel. See Montreal to Mont-Tremblant and YUL to Mont-Tremblant.

Do you do Quebec City and Ottawa?

Yes, both as fixed door-to-door fares. Quebec City is about 250 km, usually 2 hours 45 to 3 hours 15. Ottawa is about 200 km, usually 2 hours to 2 hours 30, with the Île-aux-Tourtes bridge works on the A40 affecting the West Island end. See Montreal to Quebec City and Montreal to Ottawa.

Can you take me across the border to Vermont or Lake Placid?

Sometimes. A cross-border trip needs an operator allowed to carry passengers in both Canada and the United States, so dispatch checks and confirms Burlington, Lake Placid or any US address when you book. Every passenger needs a passport. Burlington is about 150 km and Lake Placid about 180 km, plus time at the border. See Montreal to Burlington and Montreal to Lake Placid.

Do you offer cruise transfers from the Old Port?

Yes. Ships use the Grand Quay, Iberville terminal, at 200 De la Commune Street West in the Old Port. The 2026 season runs to 31 October, with nearly 50,000 passengers across 17 ships and 30 embarkation and disembarkation days. Van and Group classes suit families and parties with luggage. See Montreal cruise transfers.

When should I book early in Montreal?

Book at least 3 hours ahead at any time, and reservations open up to a year out. Book well ahead for the Canadian Grand Prix, which moved to May from 2026 (22 to 24 May 2026), the Francos in mid-June, the Fête nationale on 24 June, the Jazz Festival from late June, Just for Laughs in July, Osheaga at the start of August and Igloofest from mid-January 2027. See Grand Prix transport and corporate accounts.

What happens if my flight is delayed or moved to another airport?

Give us the flight number and we track it. A delay shifts the pickup automatically at no cost, with free waiting starting from the real landing time. If a flight is diverted, say from YUL to Mirabel or from MET to Trudeau, dispatch re-briefs the chauffeur for the new airport. Dispatch is reachable around the clock on +1 888 881 7933.
