What is a Basel chauffeur service?

A Basel chauffeur service is private transport booked in advance at a fixed price in Swiss francs, driven by a professional holding the federal code 121 permit and run by a Swiss-registered licensed chauffeur operator whose driving hours are recorded under the federal Chauffeurverordnung (ARV 2). The Basel-Stadt Taxigesetz governs taxis, which are defined by their roof lamp; a pre-booked chauffeur car is not a taxi and is not hailed. Car, chauffeur and price are fixed before pickup, whether the job is a EuroAirport transfer, an hourly car service or a black car to a board meeting.

What it changes is the certainty. A Swiss-sector taxi into the city runs to about CHF 50 and its fare depends on the traffic it meets; a booked Basel car service fare does not move when the Osttangente jams or a fair empties at 18:00. The number you accept already contains 8.1 percent Swiss VAT, the motorway vignette and any airport car park charge your pickup incurs. For a straight comparison, see the Basel taxi alternative.

The booking reaches well past the city line. Novartis Campus and Roche visits, Messe Basel and Art Basel weeks, EuroAirport to Zurich when a connection leaves from there, and day routes into Germany and France confirmed by dispatch. Teams arriving every month for audits, trials or launches can put it all on one account through corporate travel in Basel.

Times assume a direct private car from the Swiss-sector exit. Peak is roughly 07:00 to 09:00 and 16:00 to 19:00 on weekdays. Art Basel days, the Herbstmesse and the morning of Morgestraich are their own category and should be planned with extra time well beyond both columns.

Where your chauffeur meets you.

EuroAirport is a single terminal on French soil, divided into a Swiss sector and a French sector. Which side you leave from decides almost everything about the pickup.

The Swiss sector.

Swiss-plated chauffeur cars collect on the Swiss side, which connects straight to Basel by a fenced, customs-free road about 2.5 km long. Private cars may no longer drive up to the arrival or departure levels; only buses, taxis and authorised vehicles go there. The Swiss-side express car park holds 250 spaces, 15 of them kept for limousines, and the first 20 minutes are free. Whatever your pickup costs in car park or forecourt charges is already in the RYDES price.

The free default is the point your chauffeur names in the message sent before you land, so you are walking to a known place rather than scanning a kerb. Being met in the arrivals hall with your name is the paid add-on. Drive times from here are on EuroAirport to Basel SBB and EuroAirport to Messe Basel.

  • Named pickup point, the free defaultYour chauffeur confirms the exact spot on the Swiss side in the pre-arrival message.
  • Meet and greet, a paid add-onWaiting in arrivals with your name, useful with heavy bags, children or a first visit.
  • Swiss side means francsEach sector charges in its own currency: CHF on the Swiss side, euros on the French side.
EuroAirport Swiss sector · 900 × 600

The French sector.

The French sector has its own exits, its own taxis priced in euros, and its own road out. A car cannot drive between the two sectors on the airport site; it has to leave through the customs zone and come round. That is why the side matters when you book. A Swiss-registered car is planned for the Swiss sector, and if your journey starts or ends in France, dispatch confirms the arrangement when you book rather than leaving it to the day.

For reference, French-sector taxis quote about €155 to 165 to Freiburg by day and €125 to 135 to Colmar. Cross-border transfers such as EuroAirport to Freiburg are possible by arrangement and are confirmed by dispatch, never sold automatically.

Private aviation.

Business aircraft at EuroAirport must use a ground handler, and passengers choose Swiss or French clearance on arrival. Tell us which, along with the handler's name, and the chauffeur is briefed for that side. During Art Basel, general aviation is restricted: stopovers are limited to one hour and there is no overnight parking on the main ramp, so arrival slots fill early and the timing has to be exact.

easyJet is the base carrier and holds about 55 percent of the airport's traffic. When the main runway closed from 15 April to 20 May 2026, easyJet was the only airline flying, which is a reminder that works here can reshape the schedule. Zurich long-haul connections are covered on EuroAirport to Zurich and Zurich chauffeur service.

Pickup arrangements above were checked against public sources in October 2026. Rules at a binational airport change, so treat your chauffeur's pre-arrival message as the authority on where to walk and which exit to use.

VAT, vignette and the airport car park.

Basel has no congestion charge and no city toll. What adds to a fare here is Swiss VAT, the motorway vignette, and whatever the airport charges for the minutes a car spends waiting for you.

The vignette, CHF 40 a year, covers every Swiss motorway, including the A2 Osttangente through the city and the routes to Zurich, Lucerne and Bern. Swiss VAT at 8.1 percent applies to passenger transport, and on a cross-border trip only the Swiss kilometres are taxed. Both are inside every RYDES price, and so is any car park or forecourt charge at EuroAirport that your pickup incurs.

Under the Swiss price display ordinance, the number shown has to be the total you pay, VAT and fixed surcharges included. So there is no separate line for any of it on a RYDES booking. Service is included in the price. Anything extra is voluntary, offered once at payment, and you can decline. The only cost that sits outside the quote is paid parking when you ask the car to wait at a stop that charges for it.

Routing is the operator's decision and does not change your price. A chauffeur bound for Kleinbasel at 17:00 may avoid the Osttangente entirely; one heading to the Novartis Campus stays close to the river on the St. Johann side. Taxi and bus figures are for orientation; the side-by-side cost comparison is on Basel taxi versus chauffeur.

How long it really takes.

The airport is close, but the A2 Osttangente carries the motorway straight through the city, and congestion in the region is rising. Plan for the upper end of these ranges more often than you would like.

RouteOff-peakWeekday peakWhat moves it

EuroAirport to Bern1 h 25 to 1 h 401 h 40 to 2 h 05The A2 south through the Jura, then the A1

Three things move these numbers. The A2 Osttangente runs through the middle of Basel, and the Rhine Tunnel bypass meant to relieve it fell with the motorway package voters rejected on 24 November 2024. TCS beider Basel reports that congestion hours in the Basel region rose 60.5 percent in 2025. And on the German side, the ADAC counted 1,336 hours of congestion on the A5 approaching the Weil am Rhein border in 2025, mostly from truck customs clearance, which matters for any run towards Freiburg. Clocks go back on 25 October 2026, so check arrival times on any booking made before then.

Out of Basel.

Each run is one fixed fare for the whole journey, with Swiss VAT on the Swiss kilometres already counted. Three countries are inside an hour, and the borders are why some of them need confirming.

Cross-border trips to Germany and France are confirmed by dispatch at booking, never sold automatically, and every passenger needs valid travel documents. Journeys between two points in Switzerland are always carried out by a Swiss-registered licensed chauffeur operator. Long days are planned around the federal driving-time rules, so a Basel day in Lucerne with an evening return may include a scheduled break. For trips starting in Zurich, see Zurich chauffeur service.

When you should not book us.

Basel's airport bus is quick, frequent and cheap, and for some arrivals it is simply the right choice.

If you are one person with a cabin bag going to a hotel near Basel SBB, take Bus 50. It leaves from the Swiss-sector arrivals forecourt every 7 to 10 minutes between 04:30 and midnight, reaches the station in about 20 minutes, and costs CHF 4.50 for an adult. No car will beat that on price, and at peak it will barely beat it on time. Onward to Zurich, Bern or Lucerne with light luggage, the train from Basel SBB is usually the better answer, and a Swiss Travel Pass for 3 consecutive days costs CHF 254 in second class in 2026.

A chauffeur makes sense in other situations: a family with checked bags, a group of three or more, a fair team with display cases, a landing after the last bus, a destination the bus does not serve such as the Novartis Campus, Allschwil or Muttenz, a day with several meetings, or Art Basel week when taxis are scarce. That covers a good share of Basel trips, though not all of them, and we would rather be clear about it. The numbers side by side are on the Basel taxi alternative.

Is EuroAirport Basel in Switzerland or France?

It is entirely on French soil, about 8 km northwest of Basel, but it is run as a binational airport with a Swiss sector and a French sector in one terminal. The Swiss sector, coded BSL, connects directly to Basel by a fenced customs-free road about 2.5 km long. Swiss-registered chauffeur cars collect from the Swiss side. See EuroAirport transfers.

Where does my chauffeur meet me at EuroAirport?

On the Swiss side, at the point named in the message your chauffeur sends before you land. Private cars may no longer drive up to the arrival and departure levels, and the Swiss-side express car park keeps 15 of its 250 spaces for limousines. Meet and greet inside arrivals is a paid add-on. Timing into the city is on EuroAirport to Basel SBB.

What if I arrive in the French sector?

Tell us at booking. A car cannot drive between the Swiss and French sectors on the airport site; it has to go out through the customs zone, so the pickup side is planned in advance. Each sector also charges in its own currency, francs on the Swiss side and euros on the French side. If your journey starts or ends in France, dispatch confirms the arrangement when you book.

How long does EuroAirport to Basel take?

About 15 to 20 minutes to Basel SBB or Marktplatz off-peak, and 25 to 35 minutes at weekday peak. Messe Basel is 15 to 20 minutes off-peak and 25 to 40 at peak, much longer on Art Basel days. The Novartis Campus is the quickest, at 14 to 18 minutes. See EuroAirport to Messe Basel.

Are VAT, the vignette and airport charges included?

Yes. Swiss VAT at 8.1 percent, the CHF 40 motorway vignette and any EuroAirport car park or forecourt charge for your pickup are inside the price, shown in Swiss francs. On cross-border trips only the Swiss kilometres carry VAT. The one cost outside the total is paid parking if you ask the car to wait at a stop that charges. Compare with a taxi on the Basel taxi alternative.

Do I need to tip my Basel chauffeur?

No. Service is included in the price. Anything extra is voluntary, offered once at payment, and you can decline. Swiss price display rules require the price shown to be the total you pay, so there is nothing to add afterwards.

Are Basel chauffeurs licensed?

Yes. Pre-booked chauffeur service in Basel is governed by federal rules and the operator's registration. Every chauffeur holds the federal permit for professional passenger transport, code 121 on the driving licence, and driving and rest times are recorded by digital tachograph under the Chauffeurverordnung (ARV 2). The Basel-Stadt Taxigesetz, in force since 1 May 2017, covers taxis, which it defines by the roof lamp. Basel-Stadt keeps no limousine register like Zurich's; on 5 May 2026 the cantonal government said it supports equal rules for all operators but wants the standard four years and coordination with other cantons and SECO.

Is the bus from EuroAirport cheaper?

Yes, much cheaper. Bus 50 runs from the Swiss-sector arrivals forecourt to Basel SBB in about 20 minutes, every 7 to 10 minutes from 04:30 to midnight, for CHF 4.50 per adult. For one traveller with light luggage going to a hotel near the station, it is the cheapest option and we would recommend it. A chauffeur is the better choice with heavy luggage, several people, a late landing or a destination the bus does not reach.

How much does a taxi from EuroAirport cost?

A Swiss-sector taxi to central Basel is about CHF 50, and the flat fare to Zurich is CHF 440. French-sector taxis charge in euros, about €155 to 165 to Freiburg by day and €125 to 135 to Colmar. A RYDES fare is fixed at booking and includes VAT and airport charges. See EuroAirport to Zurich.

How do I get from Basel to Zurich Airport?

By car it is roughly 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 25 from EuroAirport off-peak, longer at peak, priced as one fixed fare. The Osttangente through Basel decides how the first stretch goes, so plan from your check-in deadline. With light luggage the train from Basel SBB is often the sensible choice. See Basel to Zurich and Zurich chauffeur service.

Can you take me to Freiburg or Colmar?

Often, yes, but cross-border trips are confirmed by dispatch at booking rather than sold automatically. Freiburg im Breisgau is about 72 km, usually 1 hour to 1 hour 15, with truck customs queues on the A5 at Weil am Rhein the main variable. Colmar is about 65 km, around an hour. Every passenger needs valid travel documents. See Basel to Freiburg and Basel to Colmar.

Can I book a car for a day at Novartis and Roche?

Yes. Book by the hour with a two-hour minimum in 30-minute increments, and the chauffeur waits between the Novartis Campus in St. Johann and Roche in Wettstein or any other stop. Book at least 3 hours ahead, and reservations open up to a year out. See hourly chauffeur hire.

How early should I book for Art Basel?

As early as you book your hotel. Art Basel runs 17 to 20 June 2027, when hotel and car demand in the city is at its peak, Messe runs take much longer than usual, and general aviation at EuroAirport is limited to one-hour stopovers with no overnight parking on the main ramp. See Art Basel chauffeur service and Messe Basel.

What is on in Basel this autumn and winter?

The Herbstmesse runs from 24 October to 8 November 2026 and the Swiss Indoors tennis tournament at St. Jakobshalle from 24 October to 1 November 2026, both adding traffic around the fairgrounds and the city. The Christmas market runs from 26 November to 23 December 2026. Basel Fasnacht is 15 to 17 February 2027, starting with Morgestraich at 04:00 on Monday 15 February, when the old town is closed to traffic. For group movements, see corporate travel.

Can I be collected from Weil am Rhein, Lörrach or Saint-Louis?

Yes, by arrangement. The towns just across the border in Germany and France are within the Basel coverage area, but every cross-border pickup or drop-off is confirmed by dispatch at booking. Journeys between two points in Switzerland are always carried out by a Swiss-registered licensed operator.

What if my flight is delayed?

Add the flight number and we track it. A delay moves your pickup at no cost, and the 60 free minutes start from the actual landing time. Beyond that, waiting is billed in 15-minute increments at the class rate, and you are told before it starts. If a flight diverts, for example to Zurich, dispatch re-briefs the chauffeur. Dispatch is reachable around the clock on +1 888 881 7933.
